Sensory play.
Early intervention has proved highly beneficial to those with an ASD. There are programs within the Port Huron Area School District to assist students with an ASD in receiving early interventions.
One program within the district services students ages 0-3 with ASD and other developmental disabilities. This program is designed for both the student and the family. This program gives the children the routine of being in a school setting while developing communication skills. This classroom is located at Garfield Elementary School within the Port Huron Area School District.
After the student reaches their third birthday, they may continue into an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classroom. These classrooms focus on teaching students academic skills like numbers, colors and letters while also developing communication skills. This classroom also focuses on independence in the classroom, preparing the student to go onto kindergarten. There are numerous ECSE classrooms throughout the Port Huron Area School District.
