Student with autism playing.
In St. Clair County, the process of determining eligibility for special education services for those individuals with autism starts with the initial concern that can come from parents/guardians, school staff or the medical community. Once parent consent for the evaluation is obtained, the school can evaluate the student using an appropriate test. The people involved with this evaluation are the school psychologist, school social worker and if applicable, the speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist and physical therapist.
After the evaluation an IEP (individualized education plan) meeting is held with the classroom teacher, the individuals who did the evaluation and the parents. If the recommendation for eligibility for autism is made, the team must describe the student’s present level of academic achievement and functional performance. From here, appropriate goals and objectives can be made and be put into practice.
Individuals with the Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis may only receive special education services under the category of Autism Spectrum Disorder if the state guidelines for the impairment are met.
If the student has a medical diagnosis of autism or Asperger's Syndrome, it does not automatically qualify the student for special education services.
